LICENSE PLATE PROJECT

UPDATE: Our Bill (SB 259) was first introduced (December 2007) and referred to the Senate Highways and Transportation Committee.

Senate Bill 259, legislation creating the new Volunteer Specialty License Plate, was an agenda item in the Senate Highways and Transportation Committee meeting March 11 and April 21. Senator Joy Padgett, our legislative sponsor, provided initial testimony. Additional testimony was given by Kitty Burcsu, Ohio Community Service Council, Janet George, City Year Columbus, and Dale Leach, Ohio District of Kiwanis International.

NEXT STEPS: In early fall 2008, the legislation should move out of committee to the full Senate for a vote. Then ...on to the House and then to the Governor for his signature! "Thanks" to Brady Oxender, Senator Padgett, and Rep. Larry Flowers for their fine work on behalf of volunteers throughout the state.

Stay tuned for further details …it’s moving

OVERVIEW:
The Ohio Community Service Council is coordinating an EXCITING effort to create an Ohio "VOLUNTEER" License Plate to help support volunteer activities throughout the state!

Thanks to over 1,000 interested volunteer supporters, the new plate is closer to becoming a reality. Before the project could even be introduced in the State Legislature, 1,000 signatures had to be obtained from volunteer supporters- that has now been achieved – thanks to you! State Senator Joy Padgett and Representative Larry Flowers are now “carrying the ball” through the required legislative process. Stay tuned for further updates.

Proceeds generated from the sale of the license plates will be used for a variety of activities including:

  • grants to local organizations for innovative volunteer programs;
  • further development of Ohio's Citizen Corps (citizen involvement in homeland security);
  • support for Make A Difference Day Ohio (the largest national day of service);
  • assistance with local matching funds for AmeriCorps programs - and more!

Coalition of Care

Transition is the word that most characterizes my last year!  Away from the Ohio Community Service Council and Make A Difference Day Ohio which are very close to my heart - into the directorship of a very small, grassroots faith-based non-profit organization.  The Licking County Coalition of Care was born out of the need for local churches to be able to meet the emergency assistance needs in our county.  Churches routinely receive calls or walk-ins looking for financial help, staff members have difficulty discerning whether those requests are legitimate and if financial help is the best help that can be provided.

At the Coalition, we work with referrals from local churches. During the process, we coach clients through accessing local resources, conduct an Ohio Benefits Bank check with them, develop a current budget and talk about possible long-term solutions to their overwhelming financial challenges.  After interviewing them and compassionately listening to their story, we verify their need and provide financial assistance to help keep shelter over their heads, utilities turned on, transpiration to a new job or doctor's appointment, or help with immediate medical needs.  As a faith-based organization, we also focus on connecting them to a local church and provide Bibles and daily devotionals for them free of charge.

We are a team of 40 partnering churches and 21 volunteers who provide direct client service and come from a broad spectrum of church backgrounds.  Our goal is for this ministry to provide the most effective assistance possible.  The stories are endless and the need ever increasing in our current economy.

Connie served as the project coordinator for Make A Difference Day Ohio from 2000-2007. Thanks for continuing to give back!
